The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential uses of rapeseed cake in the meal of growing and fattening or gestating and lactating young ruminants. The analytical developments realised allow the monitoring of the glucosinolates, antinutritional factors of rapeseed, and their breakdown products (5-vinyl-1, 3-oxazolidine-2-thione and thiocyanates ions) in organs and biological fluids of animals. Initially, we studied the zootechnic, physiologic ans metabolic effects of rapeseed press cake, incorporated in concentrated meal for lambs, bulls and ewes. Under the experimental conditions, the rapeseed cake does not affect the physiology or the growing or slaughtering performances of the animals. The glucosinolates, from the meal, are present in the organism only as their byproducts. The concentration of thiocyanates ions increases in the plasma, the ewe milk and different organs (thyroid, liver, kidneys, lungs). The experiences show a slight thyroid hypertrophy and histologic modifications in relation with the preferential accumulation of the 5-vinyl-1, 3-oxazolidine-2-thione in this organ. Based on these results, two experimentations are realised in order to determine the maximal proportions of industrial rapeseed cake that can be incorporated in the concentrates for bulls or lambs without any consequences on health or on animal performances (threshold "zero trouble effect"). The glucosinolates concentration in the rapeseed meal is 21, 1 micro mol/g of dried material and no major problem is observed despite the incorporation rate of 34 % in the concentrates for bulls and 40 % in the concentrates for lambs. Histologic changes of the thyroid are observed with the highest rates of incorporation of rapeseed cake in concentrated meal. The results allow us to obtain considerable information and to make recommendations concerning the incorporation of "00" rapeseed cake in feed for young ruminants.
